Three points you will get to know in this article:

  1. IPL auction spending peaked at ₹639.15 crore in 2025, surpassing the ₹557 crore record from 2022.
  2. IPL 2025 highlighted with Franchises had ₹120 crore each.
  3. Teams increasingly spend big in both mega and mini auctions, even after costly player retentions.

A Year-on-Year Breakdown of IPL Auction Spending (2008–2025)

The highly anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) Mega Auction 2025, which will feature over 500 players, is set to take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on November 24 and 25.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCC) boosted the franchises’ budget by an additional Rs 10 crore from the previous mini auction in 2024. The payment for each franchise in IPL 2025 has been upped to Rs 120 crore.

However, teams will enter the upcoming big auction with varying purses following the retention phase.  The highest ever investment in the IPL Auction was in 2022, but that record is set to be eclipsed during the two-day auction, which begins on Sunday (November 24).

The 10 franchises paid over Rs 500 crore in the IPL 2022 Mega Auction, shattering the previous record set in the 2018 IPL Mega Auction, when just eight franchises spent over Rs 400 crore.

As expected, the franchises have increased their spending at the big auctions.  In the IPL 2014 Mega Auction, the eight founding members of the profitable league broke the Rs 200 crore spending barrier for the first time.

Key Milestones: Record-Breaking Buys and Historic Auctions

In the recent IPL 2024 sale, the Rs 200 crore mark was broken for the first time in a mini auction as franchises burst the bank to land players, including a record-breaking buy of Australia pacer Mitchell Starc and the second-largest buy of his compatriot Pat Cummins.

This season, numerous organizations have already spent more than 50% of their budget before entering the auction, since retaining their core and essential players came at a high cost.  But it won’t stop them from bidding at the main auction, where they could smash another record.

The franchises’ spending has increased over time as their purses have grown.  Transactions were first made in United States Dollars (USD) before being converted to Indian Rupees (INR) beginning in 2014.  Ahead of the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, here is a look at how much money has been spent in each IPL Auction from 2008 to 2024:
