OpenAI Makes ChatGPT Go Free for a Year in India

AI giant OpenAI plans to change the terms of its low-cost ChatGPT Go membership plan by eliminating the annual subscription costs.  This would be available to users who enrolled in the plan during the brief promotional period, which began on November 4.

Additionally, the benefits of this would also be available to current ChatGPT Go members.  More information on this will be released by OpenAI in the coming days.

The move, according to the business, is a component of its inaugural DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru, which it will host on November 4.

“We’re making ChatGPT Go freely available for a year ahead of our first DevDay Exchange event in India to help more people across India easily access and benefit from advanced AI,” vice president and head of ChatGPT Nick Turley said in a statement.

What is ChatGPT Go?

Initially available solely in India, ChatGPT Go was introduced in August.  Since its inception, the plan, which costs INR 399 per month, has been available for purchase through UPI.

The extended access to its flagship model, the GPT-5, is advantageous to Go subscribers.

Within a month of the plan’s launch, the number of paid ChatGPT members in India more than doubled, according to the business.

The Strategy Behind the Free Access

The company has made ChatGPT Go available in 89 countries, including Madagascar, Egypt, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Bhutan, and others, due to the apparent strong response in India.

The AI behemoth’s attempt to enter the Indian market is consistent with its recent optimism on its chances in India.  Go’s advertising is an extension of the company’s recent assertion that India is ChatGPT’s second-largest market.

India: A Key Market for OpenAI

India appears to be the largest society in the world that is currently most eager to use AI to transform.  India has more momentum than any other country in the globe.  Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, recently stated, “I think India may be our largest market in the world, at some point, in the not very distant future.”

India, the most populous country in the world, is a prime location for the AI behemoth due to the country’s growing internet connectivity.  India currently has around 886 million internet users, and according to latest research from Inc42, this figure is expected to increase by 35% to reach 1.2 billion by 2030.

The AI startup released its most recent version of its large language model, GPT-5, to customers worldwide in early August before to the release of ChatGPT Go.  Altman implied at the time that OpenAI is collaborating with regional partners to develop AI for Indian application cases.

The parent company of ChatGPT is apparently seeking local partners in order to establish a data center with a minimum capacity of 1 GW in India.
