How Technology is Changing IPL and Playing Major Role? List of Tech Involved in IPL 2025

List of Tech Involved in IPL 2025

Three points you will get to know in this article:

  1. IPL has announced that it will use Hawk-Eye technology to call wide balls in the 2025 season.
  2. IPL 2025 production has debuted a robotic dog with a POV camera to capture candid moments.
  3. Tech Improvements in Umpiring with DRS, Ball Tracking & Snickometer, Ultra-Edge, Smart Bails.

IPL Stays Ahead in Tech Adoption and Execution

Notably, the IPL has been in the forefront of incorporating technology into decision-making.

In 2023, it allowed teams to refer wides and no-balls as part of two DRS reviews in the IPL. Last year, the league was the first to use ball-tracking technology to determine over-the-waist no-balls.

The Smart Replay System, which debuted in IPL 2024, will be used this season to increase decision-making accuracy and speed.

Hawk-Eye Technology in 2025

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has announced that it will use Hawk-Eye technology to call wide balls in the 2025 season.

The decision was relayed to all ten team captains during a pre-season meeting in Mumbai.

The cutting-edge system will also be used to call head-high wides, marking a significant advancement in the league’s use of technology for decision-making.

Hawk-Eye technology, previously utilized to measure over-the-waist no-balls in the IPL 2024, will now be used to measure head-high wides.

  • According to ESPNcricinfo, the method uses ball-tracking technology to determine the height of a ball as it passes the batter at the popping crease.
  • This is then compared to the batter’s pre-measured toe-to-head height when standing upright.
  • If the ball’s height surpasses the recorded head height, it is considered wide.
  • Each player’s head heights will be recorded in a database, eliminating subjective judgment from the decision-making process. All measurements will be done using an automated system.

Furthermore, the IPL has determined that the wide guideline, which is traditionally colored blue, will now move with the batter.  For example, if a right-handed hitter advances one foot to the right outside of the off stump, the wide guideline shifts and is utilized to calculate a wide.

Robot Dog in IPL

This year’s IPL 2025 production has taken an intriguing turn with the debut of a robotic dog capable of walking, running, jumping, and even standing on its hind legs, much like a real dog.  It also has a camera mounted on it.  The robotic dog was revealed in a video broadcast by the official IPL X (previously Twitter) account, with Danny Morrison introducing it.

In the video, the robot dog interacts with players from several clubs, including the Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians.  It even creates a heart emoji.  This robotic dog has joined the Tata IPL broadcast team.

This arises as sports broadcasting improves and advances.  The way we watch cricket, Formula One, basketball, and football matches is evolving.  Sports coverage is more detailed and fascinating than ever before, because to advances in technology such as better cameras, improved graphics, ball tracking, and higher quality footage.

However, the publication did not divulge the actual camera specifications of the robotic dog.  To better comprehend this, we examined the footage, and here’s what we discovered.

If you watch the video closely, you’ll notice that the artificial dog is generally playing around and socializing with players like Hardik Pandya and Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel.  Only halfway through the video do we get any POV (point of view) pictures from the camera mounted on the robotic dog.

According to our observations, the field of vision is quite broad, comparable to an action camera such as a GoPro, making it suitable for these kind of images.  The dog can be seen filming practice sessions in the nets, following Hardik Pandya and Danny Morrison as they engage in their customary antics.  These are some of the POV shots captured by the camera installed on the robot dog.  However, it is unknown how successfully the IPL broadcast team would use it and what kind of footage it will be appropriate for.

However, based on the nature of the video, it will most likely be utilized to shoot behind-the-scenes events, providing new angles that a conventional camera operator may be unable to catch, particularly given the dog’s low height, which can result in unusual footage.

Technically, close-up photos of the robotic dog and its mounted camera show that the camera is fairly small. It appears to be mounted on a gimbal-type mechanism.  While it’s difficult to tell if it’s a real gimbal, the setup strongly resembles one, which is necessary for stable, shake-free film, especially considering the dog’s constant mobility.

Tech Improvements in Umpiring

Umpiring choices have also become much more accurate and reliable thanks to technological advancements.  Notable advancements include:

Decision Review System: (DRS) has been expanded to include reviews for wide balls and no-balls, thereby minimizing umpiring errors and guaranteeing a more even playing field.  This expansion intends to reduce inaccurate calls in a fast-paced competition, hence improving match integrity.

Ball Tracking and Snickometer: In the DRS, tools such as ball tracking and the Snickometer are utilized to characterize the trajectory of the ball and assess whether or not the ball made contact with the bat. These technologies help umpires make accurate LBW and edge detection calls.

Ultra-Edge: This technology detects if a ball made contact with the edge of the bat before being caught, which aids with edge detection.

Smart Bails: Umpires can make more accurate run-out decisions with smart bails, which illuminate when in contact with the ball.

Tech Improvements in Fan Engagement and Experience

The IPL 2025 is designed to provide spectators with an enhanced viewing experience through numerous technology innovations:

AR and VR Features: Augmented Reality (AR) allows fans to experience matches from a variety of angles, including player perspectives.  Virtual reality (VR) headsets provide an immersive viewing experience by displaying 360-degree videos and player data.

AI-Powered Customization: AI transforms the fan experience by offering team-specific content, real-time surveys, and interactive features.  Fans are also notified about their favorite players, which further engages them with the league.

Digital Collectibles and NFTs: Fans can purchase and exchange IPL-related digital items and NFTs to enhance their immersive and participatory IPL experience.

Smart Stadiums: Upgraded stadiums provide immersive experiences with AR overlays, AI-generated highlights, and live metrics, increasing crowd excitement.

By incorporating these technological innovations, the IPL 2025 is more than simply another season; it is a stride toward the next generation of cricket, providing fans and teams with a viewing and playing experience unlike any other.
