Social media is inescapable today. We are surrounded by a barrage of social media applications like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. however one app has always made itself stand apart from these apps and the one that constantly brings something new to its users is Snapchat. Snapchat is a global multi-media messaging app. It was conceived by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy and Reggie brown in 2011. One of the basic concepts of Snapchat is that any picture, message or video sent via the app is only viewable by the receiver for a short amount of time. After this time has expired, it becomes inaccessible.

Snapchat was initially conceived as a person to person photo-sharing app. However, since the initial days, Snapchat has expanded a lot and can be used for a variety of functions such as live-video chatting, sending short videos, creating bit-mojis and sharing stories that can be viewed by your followers. Another feature of Snapchat that has made it increasingly popular among today’s youth is the ability to add filters and A-R bases lenses. Snapchat has revolutionized the way we communicate online.

Before Snapchat, all the communication on the internet was desktop-based. Whatever photos, videos or statuses that one shared could be seen by everyone and were there on your profile forever. Snapchat changed this and focused on the usage of mobile phones for online communication. When you send a snap to your friend, they can view it and then it disappears forever. This core feature of Snapchat allowed it to set itself apart from its competitors. Also, the app sends you a notification if the person whom you have communicated with screenshots of your activities. This is an important feature as the world is craving more and more privacy.

Today, Snapchat has more than 187 million active users who use the app daily. However, Snapchat has been embroiled in a recent controversy in India. It was speculated that Evan Spiegel during a meeting, when questioned about the slow growth of Snapchat in India remarked that “this app is only for rich people”. His comments faced a severe backlash from the Indian users and many of them proceeded to uninstall the app from their mobiles. The company officially responded to these speculations saying, “This is ridiculous. Snapchat is for everyone! It’s available worldwide for free”. However, this hasn’t deterred the growth of Snapchat in India. Currently, 4 million users use Snapchat and this number is all set to grow exponentially has proven itself to be one of the fastest-growing e-markets in India today.
