To lessen its reliance on US chip manufacturers for essential AI technology, the Centre is said to be planning to create its own 2-nanometre (nm) graphics processing unit (GPU) from the ground up by 2030.
According to a Mint report citing senior officials familiar with the matter, engineers at the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-Dac) in Bengaluru have been assigned the task of developing the chip with a funding of $200 million (approximately INR 1,700 crore).
Another official stated that, according to NVIDIA’s product roadmap, state-of-the-art chips will be built on a 2 nm mode by 2028. “When we enter the year 2030, these chips will represent the most advanced GPUs.”
Apple’s iPhone currently uses the most advanced 3 nm chip.
