The 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has ignited with fervor, overflowing onto the field.  As players and teams pursue records in IPL 2025, there have been some significant violations: these include fines for players due to their conduct and penalties for captains due to their team’s slow-over rates.

Per clause 12.6, a team is required to finish 14.11 overs within an hour.  During uninterrupted matches, “the 20th over must be completed within 90 minutes (consisting of 85 minutes of play and 5 minutes of time-out) from the beginning of the innings.” If this is not guaranteed, IPL skippers will incur fines.  Here is the list of slow over rate penalties for IPL 2025:

Slow Over Rate Fines: Skippers in the Spotlight

Riyan Parag (RR): When regular captain Sanju Samson was unavailable, Parag took on the role of captain for the Rajasthan Royals in the first three matches.  While Parag was defending against Chennai Super Kings, he could not finish the overs within the allotted time. As this was the team’s first offence, he was fined Rs 12 lakh.

Sanju Samson (RR): In the 23rd match of IPL 2025, Rajasthan Royals faced criticism once more for breaching the over rate rule against Gujarat Titans.  As a result, captain Sanju Samson was penalized with a fine of Rs 24 lakh, while the remaining members of the team faced fines amounting to Rs 6 lakh (or 25% of their match fees).

Rishabh Pant (LSG): Pant, the captain of Lucknow Super Giants, was fined ₹12 lakh for an over rate violation during match 16 against Mumbai Indians, marking his first offense.

Rajat Patidar (RCB): On April 7, during the high-octane clash between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore, Patidar’s side were fined for their first offence.

Veterans Penalized: Ishant Sharma’s Code of Conduct Breach

Hardik Pandya (MI): MI committed its first over-rate offence against the Gujarat Titans at Narendra Modi Stadium on March 29. As the Mumbai captain, Pandya received a fine of Rs 12 lakh.

Ishant Sharma: (Match No 20): The veteran cricketer, who was playing for Gujarat Titans in the 18th edition of the IPL, incurred a fine of 25% of his match fees and received one demerit point for violating the IPL Code of Conduct under article 2.2 during Match 20 against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Repeated Offender Digvesh Rathi (Match No. 13, 16 & 19)

The 25-year-old newcomer for the Lucknow Super Giants has turned into a bit of an enfant terrible with his ‘notebook celebration’ after getting a batsman out.  Rathi has now been convicted for his actions on three occasions.  For his initial offence on April 1, after he dismissed Priyansh Arya, he received a fine amounting to 25% of his match fees.

Even though he accrued one demerit point, his repeated offenses resulted in a fine amounting to 50 percent for his actions against Naman Dhir of the Mumbai Indians. Rathi accumulated 3 more demerit points after taking the wicket of his idol Sunil Narine. He is now faced with the prospect of a one-match suspension.
