A performed TAVR surgery in Mumbai made ways for better cardiology treatments in Mumbai

In January, one of the top Cardiologists in Mumbai Dr Ganesh Kumar headed a live demonstration called ‘Singapore Live’. Famous Cardiologists had attended this demonstration. Dr Ganesh Kumar AV is the senior consultant interventional Cardiologists and Co-ordinator at Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital in India.

LataHegde, the patient, went through a special procedure to replace a malfunctioning aortic valve in her heart. The 90-year-old lady is the first person in India to have a Made in India transcatheter aortic heart valve, after being officially made obtainable in the country.

Cardiologist Dr Ganesh Kumar was leading the ‘Singapore Live’ and the demonstration was attended by the top cardiologists in India and Singapore. Doctors in Singapore were attending this Live case demonstration through satellite transmission.

During the check-up, Dr Kumar discovered Hegde’s aortic heart valve was failing and needed a replacement, urgently. For this critical case, Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital planned on conducting the first-ever ‘Made in India’ aortic valve procedure on Hegde.

Meril Life Sciences India produced the valve used in the replacement procedure. The Vapi-based company’s valves were approved by DCG(I) after stringent tests. After multiple tests, it was finally approved for the surgeries by the end of October 2018.

The TAVR surgery in Mumbai holds fewer risks and casualties compared to any other heart surgery in India. Many people opt for open-heart surgery which creates more risk and less assurance. Also known as Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) is preferred to be conducted on elderly patients. TAVI is also performed on the people who are physically weak and are unable to cope with the open-heart surgery.

The risk of heart disease and stroke has been increasing every year. Since 1990, the number of deaths has increased by 50%, the growth has been noticed in every state. The total number of deaths and disease burden in the country has grown almost two times in the past 25 years. Currently, Heart disease is the leading individual cause for major deaths in the country, and stroke ranks as the fifth leading cause.

In 2016, Heart disease and stroke together hold 28.1% of share in the total number of deaths in India. Heart disease contributed 17.8% of the total number of deaths and strokes holds 7.1% of total demises. The number of deaths from heart diseases were observed higher in men than in women, however, deaths due to strokes were in equal proportion. Deaths from cardiovascular disease increased from 13 lakhs in 1990 to 28 lakh in 2016. TAVI Treatment in Mumbai can cost around INR 30 lakhs. Nevertheless, Made in India valves have lower the cost ofTAVI treatment in Mumbaialmost by a significant amount of INR 10 lakhs.
