Online food ordering and delivery startup, Swiggy, is one of the most successful start-ups in India. The company was introduced by, BITS-Pilani alumni SriharshaMajety and IIT-Kharagpur alumnus Nandan Reddy and Rahul Jaimini in 2014. After leaving his position from Myntra the pioneering business mind Reddy gave India a new way of food ordering and delivery solution and took over the entire market by the storm. Located in Bengaluru, Swiggy was introduced in India as a startup. Stated under a team of six delivery boys and managing 25 restaurants, Swiggy is now available in more than a hundred cities.

Swiggy is now valued more than $3.3billion, earlier this year it acquired a start-up called Kint.io. The company specializes in applying heavy learning and computer intuition for object identifying in videos, for an unknown amount. Swiggy’s acquired other start-ups such as Supr Daily, Scootsy, 48east

Swiggy Application allows you to order food and beverages online from restaurants and hotels near your location. Places available in your localities such as cafes, restaurants and major chains such as Mc Donald’s, Pizza Hut, Dominos, Burger King, KFC, Cafe Coffee Day, and others. There is no restriction over minimum order. Swiggy ranks #2 on Google Play store in the ‘Food & Drink’ category, one behind Zomato. The application has been downloaded by more than 10 million users and it currently holds 4.2 stars rating.

How does the application work?

Users have to run the Swiggy application on their Android or IOS devices or visit the Swiggy’s official website to find a complete list of restaurants under the locality. Once the restaurant is selected and the order is placed, the restaurant staff would be notified through the ‘Swiggy Owner’ application, made for restaurants owner to partner-up with Swiggy. After receiving the order details the staff would start preparing the until the delivery person arrives.

The delivery personnel closest to the location receives a broadcast signal on their driver application, ‘Swiggy Delivery’. The one who accepts the delivery has to carry orders from the restaurant and deliver it. Swiggy typically chargers 15%-25% commission over every order bill generated by the restaurant through their application.

Swiggy does not have any minimum order requirement over order. Delivery charges are generally between Rs 20 for orders less than Rs 250. The restaurant owner receives benefits like better visibility and often a drop in the commission of around 2% to 3%.

With its debut in hyperlocal service market of groceries and household goods, Swiggy stores. Now, they are seen putting their hands into the ready-to-cook market as well.
