Drinking Hair Oil on Shark Tank?
In Shark Tank India Season 4, which is now available on SonyLIV, a family from Gurugram recently made a pitch for their chemical-free hair oil business, Nidhi’s Grandmaa Secret. According to Rajat, his mother Rajni, and his wife Nidhi, their hair oil is prepared with thirteen plants and is chemical-free. In front of the judges, Nidhi and Rajat mixed some of their hair oil with a glass of water and drank it to demonstrate that their product is chemical-free. Anupam Mittal said, “Bhai andar baal ugne lag padnege (Your hair will start growing on the inside),” in response to Aman Gupta’s obvious displeasure at the scene.
Vineeta Singh quickly pointed out that the team’s other products, such as their “Herbal Sindoor,” were not chemical-free as they displayed their other offerings. Rajat was unable to provide a suitable response when Aman inquired about their rival brand, Avimee Herbal, which was highlighted in the second season of the show, and asked for a point of differentiation. Nidhi stopped her husband to clarify that their product was created with fresh ingredients after Kunal Bahl had finished explaining what Aman was interested in.
The Shark Tank pitch
Aman wondered how their offering was unique, thinking about Avimee from Season 2. Despite the herbal sindoor’s promise to be all-natural, Peyush and Anupam expressed worries about its possible chemical content. Vineeta persisted, inquiring as to what made them unique in a market crowded with other companies. Rajat also started criticizing Avimee after Aman pressed him for clarification. “You can’t just say theirs is bad and yours is good,” Aman said. That’s not the proper strategy. They were searching for a differentiator, not a comparison, Kunal explained.
With assurance, Nidhi said that they only utilized fresh, uncooked products. “The manner in which Nidhi described it demonstrates belief,” Aman said, acknowledging her conviction. She is promoting more effectively than you are. The clinical test findings were then presented by Rajat. But the sharks saw that the box lacked this information. Rajat acknowledged that they were still selling outdated stock when questioned why. “Did you come here just to clear inventory?” Anupam responded.
Kunal brought up Rajat’s uneasiness and questioned his long-term goals. Rajat said that he had other plans in case this venture didn’t work out. Vineeta said, “Your biggest hurdle is funding, but stick with your story and be patient,” after assessing the unit economics. It takes ten to fifteen years to develop a brand like this. Go on, I’m leaving. Peyush suggested that they concentrate on improving their product. Rajat seems agitated, Kunal noted, and advised him to remain committed. Both Kunal and Aman turned down the offer. Disappointed, Rajat believed Aman would put money into it. Aman, however, was not convinced of Rajat’s dedication.
With the words, “The tiger is still in the game,” Anupam gave encouragement. Everyone in the room had experienced failure, he reminded Rajat. He went on to say, “Success builds ego, failure builds character,” before offering ₹70 lakhs for 5% stock with a 1% royalty till the investment was recovered. Peyush disclosed that he had thought about requesting 10% ownership. After some hesitation, Rajat agreed to Anupam’s offer.
