Uber Buys Segments.ai To Boost Its Data Labeling Operations

The Acquisition Announcement

The two businesses announced in separate LinkedIn posts on Thursday, October 2, that Uber has acquired Segments.ai, a multi-sensor labelling platform for robotics and autonomous driving.

Uber AI Solutions, the company that provides AI data services, stated in a post that the acquisition is a component of its dedication to developing its lidar and multi-sensor data annotation capabilities.  According to the corporation, it has been working on using labels on real-world data to drive advancements in artificial intelligence, safety, and autonomy for almost ten years.

Segments.ai: The Expertise Joining Uber

“Segments.ai offers a strong foundation in lidar annotation tools, profound domain knowledge, and an amazing clientele,” the ad stated.  “As we jointly shape the future of lidar data annotation, we are excited to be collaborating with [Otto Debals, CEO and Founder of Segments.ai] and the entire team.”

In a LinkedIn post, Debals announced that he, De Brabandere, and the rest of the team would join Uber AI Solutions and carry on developing annotation tools for autonomous cars and robots.

Regarding Segments.ai, which was established in 2020, Debals stated, “We’ve supported awesome use cases: from self-driving cars and trucks to autonomous drones and tractors.”

According to a LinkedIn post by De Brabandere, they will “help supercharge the data labeling team” at Uber AI Solutions.

Uber AI Solutions: What They Offer

Uber AI Solutions uses data and AI in its own operations and provides other businesses with solutions that Uber created over the last ten years.

In June, the group announced that it had introduced new solutions and started distributing them to AI laboratories and businesses across 30 nations.

A platform that links businesses with international talent—such as specialists in computing, finance, law, science, and linguistics—that can annotate, translate, and edit multilingual and multimodal information is one way to solve this problem.

Additionally, Uber AI Solutions provides task flows, annotations, simulations, and multilingual support to aid in the training of AI agents; datasets to train large AI models for generative AI, mapping, speech recognition, and other use cases; and its own internal platforms for overseeing extensive annotation projects and validating AI inputs.

In a June news release, Megha Yethadka, general manager and head of Uber AI Solutions, stated, “We’re bringing together Uber’s platform, people, and AI systems to help other organizations build smarter AI more quickly.”
