Unacademy’s Hemesh Singh Transitions from CTO to Advisor

Hemesh Singh, co-founder of the prominent educational technology company Unacademy, has officially announced his resignation from the position of Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to transition into an advisory capacity. In a statement shared on X (formerly known as Twitter), Singh expressed his decision, stating, “After nearly a decade of collaborative efforts with @gauravmunjal and @romansaini in shaping Unacademy, I have opted to transition from an operational role to an advisory one.” Reflecting on the journey, he remarked, “It has been an enriching experience, and I am profoundly thankful for the opportunity to contribute to this transformative journey. Together, we have significantly influenced the landscape of the Test Prep Industry. What an exhilarating adventure it has been! Heartfelt gratitude to @gauravmunjal for his unwavering support and guidance.”

Unacademy was established in 2015 by Gaurav Munjal, Hemesh Singh, and Roman Saini. Originally conceived as a YouTube channel, it swiftly transformed into an educational technology platform fostering connections between instructors and students across diverse fields. Singh, holding a BTech from Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology, had previously served as the Chief Technology Officer at the networking application Flatchat prior to his involvement with Unacademy. His contributions played a pivotal role in molding Unacademy into a prominent contender within the educational technology sector. Reflecting on Singh’s departure, Gaurav Munjal, co-founder and CEO of Unacademy, expressed, “Hemesh and I embarked on our journey together 11 years ago while constructing Flatchat. It’s been an exhilarating journey, and I’ve been fortunate to have a co-founder like you. Unacademy will feel your absence.”

Despite Singh’s departure, Unacademy is still moving forward with its expansion plans. The company has experienced some high-level departures, such as COO Vivek Sinha and CFO Subramanian Ramachandran. However, these positions are being filled with new talent. For example, Pratik Dalal was recently named CFO of the offline business.

In 2022, Unacademy implemented strategic initiatives to extend enhanced voting privileges to Munjal and Singh via bonus shares, with the objective of fortifying their authority and impact on the company’s trajectory. Per Unacademy’s disclosures to the Registrar of Companies, these privileges will be activated upon the establishment of a committee by March 2025 to oversee its forthcoming initial public offering (IPO). Despite Singh’s transition to an advisory capacity, the company’s aspirations remain unaltered, with his ongoing involvement anticipated in shaping its strategic direction.
